June 14, 2010 - Telegraph.co.uk – Katherine Heigl: Hollywood Rebel
Katherine Heigl is trying not to offend anyone. With those brown doe eyes and her rom-com pedigree it might be hard to imagine Heigl uttering anything insulting but, despite her sweet, apple-pie appearance, the 31-year-old actress is not afraid to speak her mind.
So much so that, just two weeks before our meeting, her publicist fired her. Rumour has it that Heigl’s famously loose tongue was to blame. ‘That, I have to say, hurt my feelings,’ Heigl says, sitting on a deep brown leather sofa.
Motherhood is obviously agreeing with Katherine Heigl. Asked on Wednesday night’s London red carpet for her movie with Ashton Kutcher, Killers, if she and husband Josh Kelley might provide daughter Naleigh – now 18 months old – with a sibling by adopting again, the actress replied, “I hope so.”
Having brought home Naleigh from North Korea last September, Heigl said she’s finding it “difficult” to combine childcare with a career.
“Like any working mom, I have to make some compromises, but it is so much easier said than done,” said Heigl. “I knew that I wanted to keep working, because I love what I do. But it was really hard to leave her and go to work so far away.”
The adoption of Naleigh – who is named after Heigl’s mother Nancy and sister Margaret Leigh – was fast-tracked, as the baby was initially considered to have special needs. It was only after she underwent surgery for a congenital heart defect that the infant left for America. Naleigh is now 100 percent fine.
Opening at No. 3 with $16.1 million was Lionsgate’s action comedy “Killers,” starring Katherine Heigl as a woman who marries her dream man (Ashton Kutcher) only to learn he’s an international assassin.
Though she sat out more than half of the season of Grey’s Anatomy, Katherine Heigl has submitted herself in the supporting actress category for this year’s Emmy race, her representative confirms. There is no set amount of episodes that an actor must appear in to be eligible for either the supporting or lead actor categories.
Heigl only appeared in a handful of episodes this year before her character, Dr. Izzie Stevens, was last seen around Seattle Grace in January. Heigl was due back on the set of the ABC drama March 1 but she never showed up. Heigl told EW that “rumors that I refused to return were totally untrue.” ABC Studios said it was mutually agreed upon that Heigl would end her run this season.
Nominations for the 62nd Primetime Emmys will be announced July 8. As for the rest of the Grey’s stars, Ellen Pompeo submitted herself as lead actress, while the other ensemble members — including Patrick Dempsey — will duke it out in the supporting categories. To vie for the best drama prize, Grey’s submitted the two-hour finale, as well as the episodes “The Time Warp,” “Suicide is Painless,” “I Saw What I Saw,” and “Give Peace a Chance” for consideration.
Katherine Heigl is at home in Los Angeles’s Los Feliz neighborhood, pulling cheese after cheese out of her fully stocked fridge.
“This is for us,” she says, beaming as she loads crackers onto a plate. Then she kisses her 18-month-old adopted Korean daughter, Naleigh (a combination of Nancy, for Katherine’s mother and longtime manager, and Leigh, the middle name of her adopted sister, also Korean). “Mommy has to do an interview,” Katherine tells her. “And eat some cheese.”
She heads to an outdoor deck, leaving Naleigh to watch The Backyardigans with her husband, singer Josh Kelley, and Mojo, one of their six dogs. For the moment, the rest of the pack is at the park, so the house is relatively quiet. When Katherine found Mojo on the set of 27 Dresses, Josh told her no more dogs. “I started crying,” says Katherine, who everyone calls Katie. “I said, ‘Where’s your heart? Where’s your soul? I’m supposed to be marrying you, and you don’t know who I am by now,’ and he’s like, ‘Fine, just take the dog. Jesus.’”
But lately life has been focused more on Naleigh, whom she and Josh adopted last September, at nine months. Though Naleigh has been described in the press as special-needs, she was actually born with a congenital heart problem that was fixed via open-heart surgery before she left Korea. “Her heart is 100 percent fine now. She has a scar, so she won’t be wearing bikinis, which is fine by us,” Katherine explains, unembarrassed by her overprotectiveness. “A lot of children don’t find forever homes because they’re on that special-needs list, even if it’s because of something as simple as her mother smoked cigarettes for a month, not knowing she was pregnant. That’s not so huge that you couldn’t handle it.”

Katherine Heigl has discovered the fountain of youth.
The former “Grey’s Anatomy” star has been tapped as the lead actress in the romance film “The Age of Adaline,” per The Hollywood Reporter.
The film focuses on a young woman (Heigl), born in the early 1900s, who never ages following a mysterious accident.
However, after years of being alone, the woman meets a man who forces her to consider whether he is worth giving up immortality to be with.
Heigl, who last hit the big screen opposite Gerard Butler in 2009’s “The Ugly Truth,” will next appear alongside Ashton Kutcher in the romantic comedy “The Killers,” which hits theaters on June 4.
She also recently wrapped production on another rom-com, “Life As We Know It,” with Josh Duhamel, Christina Hendricks and Josh Lucas.

It’s official: Katherine Heigl has left Grey’s Anatomy.
“I am done,” the actress tells Entertainment Weekly in its new issue. “We just finalized our agreement. Everyone had been working really hard to find an amicable and gracious way of letting go and moving on. It’s sad but it’s what I wanted.”
In the end, Heigl decided to leave the hit ABC show because of her family — and not necessarily to advance her film career. “I started a family and it changed everything for me,” she says. “It changed my desire to work full-time.”
In Sept. 2009, Heigl and husband Josh Kelley adopted their daughter Naleigh from South Korea. She also took a three-month leave from Grey’s Anatomy to spend time with her family, an experience that made her want to focus on motherhood, she recently told PEOPLE.
“I think I’m just gonna try and keep it a little more mellow,” she told PEOPLE, “and be a little bit more of a mom, since that’s a big part of my life now. I took those three months off and I realized how very, very important is my family is to me and I want to be more available to them.”
Speculation had grown recently that the actress was planning her exit from Grey’s after she did not return to set following her maternity leave. “The details, the timeline of that — it’s all shades of gray,” a source told PEOPLE at the time. “The terms of her exit are still being sorted out.”
And if fans are expecting a big farewell arc, they may be disappointed. Heigl tells Entertainment Weekly that her Jan. 21 episode was her last — and that she is no longer appearing in the season’s final five episodes. “I know I’m disappointing the fans,” she tells EW. “I just had to make a choice. I hope I made the right one.”
