Paging Dr. Stevens? Don’t count on it.
Katherine Heigl is “not likely” to be back on Grey’s Anatomy after the current season, according to a source close to the situation.
Heigl, who was due back on the set of the ABC medical drama after a three-month maternity leave but did not return to work, is negotiating her way out of her contract.
“The details, the timeline of that — it’s all shades of gray,” the source says. “The terms of her exit are still being sorted out.”
In the most recent episode to feature Heigl, her character, Dr. Izzie Stevens, walked away from the Seattle Grace hospital, leaving viewers to wonder whether she’ll be back at all.
“You can always have her return in a compelling way, and leave in an equally compelling way, because [show creator] Shonda [Rhimes] could certainly write that,” the source said. “It’s just not clear if she’ll come back onto the canvas this season, for a farewell arc, or if her storyline is already done.”
Reps for ABC Studios had no comment. Stay tuned!

Seattle Grace is losing another doctor — at least temporarily.
Katherine Heigl, 30, is taking a leave of absence from Grey’s Anatomy to film a new movie, the romantic comedy Life as We Know It.
An ABC rep cannot confirm the exact length of time she will be out of pocket — EW.com is reporting a 5-episode hiatus — but tells PEOPLE, “Katherine is taking time off to film a movie. The producers at Grey’s have accommodated past things like that before. It’s a cast of 13 and it is a true ensemble so the show is mindful [of other commitments].”
Heigl’s departure is set to begin this month, last into November and will be explained on screen, EW reports. Meanwhile, fellow castmate Ellen Pompeo is due to give birth to her first child in October and is expected to take maternity leave around the same time — an overlap that’s “all being worked out,” the rep tells PEOPLE.
The rep also notes that none of these events were surprises for the show. “Shonda [Rhimes] has had plans in place for a very long time.” But don’t expect producers to reveal how they will explain where Izzie is during Katherine’s hiatus.
In related casting news, show producers announced that three new characters will join the cast in recurring roles. They will be played by Nora Zehetner, Robert Baker, and Jesse Williams.
In June, T.R. Knight announced he was leaving the ABC drama after months of speculation.

Her friend T.R. Knight might be leaving Grey’s Anatomy, but Katherine Heigl will still be sporting scrubs come fall.
A rep for ABC confirms to PEOPLE that Heigl, who plays Dr. Izzie Stephens, isn’t leaving the show despite speculation that she was ready to go to focus on her movie career. The rep also confirmed that Jessica Capshaw, who plays Dr. Arizona Robbins, will return to the show as a series regular.
Show writers left Heigl’s character in a precarious position at the end of last season. After surviving surgery for her brain tumor, Izzie took a turn for the worse, and viewers were left with an ambiguous image of Izzie on an elevator in the dress she wore when Denny died. Knight’s character, Dr. George O’Malley, who was a John Doe at Seattle Grace, was waiting when the doors the elevator doors opened.
In announcing his departure from the show, Knight said the decision was not easy. “I am extremely grateful to have had the opportunity to play this character,” he said in a statement, “and will miss my fellow cast and crew very much.”

The cast lineup for season six of Grey’s Anatomy is becoming clearer by the day.
Following on Marc Malkin’s report last month that star T.R. Knight is leaving the series, a source confirms that Katherine Heigl “will be back.”
But what’s the official word from the show bosses and Heigl’s people?
Reps for the hit ABC series and for Katherine Heigl both declined to comment.
Season five ended on a double-death cliffhanger, as Knight’s character, George O’Malley, struggled to survive massive trauma inflicted by a bus accident, and Heigl’s character, Izzie Stevens, endured life-threatening complications of her cancer treatment.
The split decision—Knight goes and Heigl stays—was telegraphed in the fifth season finale’s episode-ending dream sequence, wherein Izzie seemed drawn back to the voices of the friends trying to save her life, while George seemed serenely ready to move into another phase of his existence.
